ORTLIEB
After returning home from a miserable, wet cycle tour of South England in 1981, Hartmut, the founder of Ortlieb, started making a pannier out of red truck tarp on his mother’s sewing machine. He fixed the lid with a piece of webbing strap and used hooks from the hardware store to fix the pack to the bike rack.
The rear pannier was followed by a handle bar bag, and very soon after, the demand was too high for a one man operation so family members and friends were roped in and ORTLIEB was founded in 1982.
Today, Ortlieb is synonymous with cycle travel for making 100% waterproof, practical, and functional luggage and touring accessories. Ortlieb manufacture all of their waterproof products at their production facility in Heilsbronn, Germany. High product quality, durability and their own repair service are integral to Ortlieb’s philosophy.

Alongside the Seat Pack, this handlebar bag kickstarts Ortlieb’s entrance into the bikepacking arena – waterproof bags suitable for bike camping trips off-the-beaten-track; bags that can be mounted to most bike without racks.
Ortlieb’s handlebar pack can be fixed to pretty much any handlebar setup (see clearances needed below) using the strap and foam spacing system – drop bars included, given the width flexibility of the roll-closure. Once packed, the compression straps and secure mounting system ensures the safe, sturdy and waterproof storage of your kit whether rolling over tarmac, or serious gravel.
The elastic cords on the front of the bag are useful for stuffing additional items – extra layers you use regularly, or things that you pick up on the road. Given Ortlieb’s experience with panniers, practical things like modest reflective panels are also integrated on the front of the pack to ensure added visibility on the road.
This bag is designed to connect with the Accessory Pack, using the practical alloy hooks. Use them alongside the Seat Pack for a full waterproof bikepacking setup , and even combine them with a set of front panniers, or rear panniers for more luggage space – a cross setup.
