FAQs

Will my own bike be OK for a Pannier Tour, or should I hire one?
Nearly all of our tours are designed to be ridden on a gravel ‘adventure’ bike which run 32 – 50mm tyres and has a good range of gears. The wider tyre the better, and the larger the rear cassette / smaller the front chainring the better. Whilst we carry spares and all the tools for mechanicals, we’d appreciate you bringing a few spares with you on the trip if your bike has specific componentry – Cannondale derailleur hangers, for example. We’ve learned that one from experience! Bike recommendations can be found in the individual Trip FAQ’s.

What do you mean by Off-Bike Clothes?
This is a set of spare, dry clothes to pull on in the evening to relax and socialise in – whether at Pannier Basecamp, or remote mountain hut. A comfy t-shirt or base-layer, warm jumper/hoodie/fleece/down jacket, a spare pair of shorts or packable trousers (like Polartec leggings), underwear and socks. Clothes need to be as packable as possible – ready to be squished into bikepacking bags. No huge winter fleeces, or heavy-denim jeans, basically.

Do I need to pack Off-Bike Footwear?
You’re more than welcome to stick in your cycling footwear, but a few years’ experience says it is really nice to have a spare pair of footwear to slip on in the evening, for wandering about outside and in. A pair of light packable pumps, flip-flops, or outdoor sandals like Bedrocks, Crocs or Tevas are ideal as they are lightweight and easy to carry on a bike…

What about cycling shoes, pedals and bottles?
If you hire a bike it will come fitted with flat pedals as standard. If you use clipped in pedals like Shimano SPD you will need to bring your shoes and pedals with you and we will then fit them to your bike at the start of the tour. Road riding shoes / cleats are rarely suitable for our Tours, given the terrain and off-the-bike time, so please think twice about using these! If you can, please bring your own water bottles; two will do it…

Should I bring my own food?
Food is a staple on our tours – main meals are highlights, designed around the riding. We do have a selection of ride snacks to hand out regularly on our tours, however we recommend you bring a selection of your favourites with you, just to make sure you have something with you at all times to avoid the risk of bonking. Plus, we like to see (and taste) all your novel riding snacks and treats – special points for the most ‘out-there’ or unusual…

BYOM? BYOS? Bring your own mug? Bring your own spork?
We’ll have everything you need to eat and drink with us, but please do bring your own favourite camp/enamel mugs and sporks with you if you’ve got your own already. Bring your own stove and hot-drink kit, if you’d like. The more the merrier; it’s always cool to see new things and setups…

What’s the watermelon stuff all about?
On one of our first Desert of Wales recce Tours, Stef had a watermelon in the van, parked up near our wild swim spot on the River Irfon. Awaiting the group of riders, he Sharpie-d a Pannier logo on it and looking for something to cut it up with settled on the splitting axe in the back of the van. So now, the tropical fruit axe-ing features as ceremony now-and-again on trips. So tasty. So refreshing. So ridiculous.

We’re here to help and ensure your bikepacking experience with us is the best it can be, so please do speak to us if you have any further questions, or importantly, don’t understand something or want more detailed information >> basecamp@pannier.cc
